In recent years, the term dermatologic surgery has been increasingly used in the fields of plastic surgery and dermatology. This encompasses simple aesthetic procedures on the skin's surface, as well as excisions of benign and malignant skin tumors, and the removal of moles.

Dermato-oncology is a subspecialty of dermatology that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) skin tumors, as well as the removal of moles. A higher risk of developing melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, is seen in people who have already had melanoma or have a family history of it; people with a large number of moles or atypical moles; those who have had intense sun exposure and sunburns; users of tanning beds; and individuals with fair skin, red hair, or blond hair. Therefore, preventive examinations of moles and other skin changes with a dermatoscope, timely detection and treatment of precancerous and cancerous changes, and follow-up of patients after melanoma surgery and other malignant skin tumor surgeries are necessary.
