HAIR LOSS AND SCALP CHANGES

Hair loss and changes on the scalp (itching, flaking, redness, etc.) are among the most common reasons for visiting a dermatologist. These problems are not just aesthetic in nature – they can also significantly affect well-being and self-confidence, and can also be a sign of other health problems in the body.

The most common symptoms of scalp diseases

  • Itchy and flaky scalp.,
  • excessive hair loss when brushing or washing,
  • postoperative hair thinning and an increasingly visible part or the appearance of baldness,
  • Circular or scattered bald spots.

If you notice excessive hair loss, itching, or changes on your scalp, it is recommended to get it checked as soon as possible – timely diagnosis is key to successful treatment and maintaining healthy hair.

HAIR LOSS - “ALOPECIA”

Hair loss diseases “alopecia” In broad terms, we divide into two groups:

  • nebrozgotinske alopecije the hair follicle is preserved, so the hair can grow back after the cause is removed,
  • Anagen effluvium A prolonged disease process permanently damages the hair follicle, leading to irreversible hair loss.
  • Causes of hair loss

Hair loss can be the result of various factors.

  • inclinations,
  • hormonal changes (e.g., thyroid diseases)
  • local or systemic infections (e.g. fungal infections of the scalp),
  • Systemic diseases (e.g., autoimmune diseases),
  • nutrient deficiencies (e.g., iron) or dietary changes,
  • external influences (improper care, chemical processes that damage the hair shaft and cause breakage).

A thorough conversation with the patient is crucial for understanding the cause of hair loss, as various factors or even multiple scalp conditions often intertwine simultaneously.

What happens during a dermatological examination of the scalp?

A thorough patient interview and a professional dermatological examination of the scalp are crucial for clarifying the cause of hair loss and making an accurate diagnosis.

Problems are often the result of a combination of several factors or even several concurrent scalp conditions, so additional laboratory or imaging tests are often recommended to determine possible causes.

A clinical examination of the scalp typically includes:

  • clinical tests to assess disease activity, e.g., »pull test«,
  • Dermoscopic examination of the scalp (trichoscopy) with a manual or digital dermoscope, enabling 10- to 140-fold magnification and accurate assessment of hair and scalp,
  • Scalp biopsy and histopathological analysis if necessary (especially if scarring alopecia is suspected).

Based on the discussion, expert examination, and investigation results, we will diagnose the scalp condition and jointly develop an individualized treatment plan with the patient.
