Reconstruction and Treatment of Burn Injuries

Treatment of severe burns requires rapid, precise, and multi-stage surgical management. Extensive burns often necessitate multiple operations, intensive care, and the collaboration of numerous specialists – surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, physical therapists, and other experts.

In surgical treatment of burns, dead tissue is first removed (necrectomy) to promote better healing and reduce the risk of infection. Modern surgical techniques, including water jet and specialized surgical instruments, are used to clean the wounds. After preparing the wound, the damaged area is covered with skin grafts taken from uninjured parts of the body.

Skin grafts are specially prepared and adapted to the burn wound to allow for optimal blood supply, tissue protection, and gradual skin regeneration. For deeper burns, escharotomy incisions are sometimes necessary to reduce pressure in the damaged tissue and improve the survival of the affected body part.

Recovery from burns is a long-term process that involves multiple procedures, regular wound dressing changes, rehabilitation, and a gradual return of functionality and mobility. The ultimate goal of treatment is not only wound closure but also improving the quality of life, reducing scarring, and achieving the best possible functional and aesthetic restoration of the damaged area.
