Correction of ear deformities in children or adults – when is the right time?

Otoplasty is a procedure often performed in childhood, but many adult patients also opt for it.

Since protruding ears are often a congenital condition, they can cause discomfort, shyness, or peer teasing in children. That is precisely why ear correction is often recommended before starting school.

Why is surgery often performed on children?

Correction of ear protrusions in children makes sense:

  • when the ears are fully developed,
  • in case of prominent protruding ears,
  • how appearance affects self-confidence,
  • to reduce psychosocial distress,
  • when the child themselves expresses a desire for the procedure.

The ear structures are sufficiently developed at this age, so the procedure does not affect further ear development.

Why do adults also opt for the procedure?

Many adult patients decide to have otoplasty later in life because the appearance of their ears has been a concern since childhood, or they did not want or have the opportunity to undergo the procedure earlier.

Modern otoplasty allows for:

  • natural results,
  • least noticeable scars,
  • Get well soon.,
  • improving facial harmony,
  • greater self-confidence.

The goal of the procedure is to create a symmetrical and natural-looking ear without a feeling of artificiality or an exaggerated result.
